As you may have gathered from the name of my blog, one of my biggest passions is discovering new cuisines and hidden food scenes while I’m travelling. In fact, food is a huge part of how I select destinations and put together my itineraries, and I will go out of my way to try that ‘to die for dish’ while travelling.
But for many people eating alone in a restaurant or café can feel intimidating or uncomfortable, especially if you’re in a strange place. So what do you do if even the thought of eating alone gives you the cold sweats. Stay in? Order room service? Definitely not. Here are some helpful tips for those who are hesitant to eat alone while traveling:
- Choose the right place: Look for restaurants or cafes that have a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Avoid busy or crowded places if you prefer a more relaxed dining experience.
- Start with casual settings: Begin by dining at casual eateries such as cafes, bistros, or small local restaurants. These places are often more laid-back and comfortable for solo diners.
- Bring a book or electronic device: Having something to read or occupy yourself with can make dining alone feel less awkward. It gives you a sense of purpose and can help you feel more at ease.
- Choose off-peak hours: If you’re feeling self-conscious about dining alone, consider going during off-peak hours when the restaurant is less crowded. This can provide a more relaxed environment and reduce any perceived judgment.
- Start with a local specialty: Trying a local specialty dish can be a great way to connect with the culture and cuisine of the place you’re visiting. It can also be an interesting conversation starter with the staff or fellow diners.
- Engage with the staff: Strike up a conversation with the waiter or waitress. They can provide recommendations, insights about the menu, or local tips. Engaging with the staff can make you feel more connected and less alone.
- Observe and enjoy your surroundings: Take the opportunity to people-watch, enjoy the ambiance, or appreciate the interior design of the restaurant. Immerse yourself in the experience and savour the moment.
- Embrace the freedom: Dining alone gives you the freedom to choose what you want to eat, how long you want to stay, and how you want to spend your time. Embrace this freedom and enjoy the experience of treating yourself to a meal of your choice.
- Remember that you’re not alone: Many people dine alone while traveling, and it’s more common than you might think. Remind yourself that you are doing something normal and that people around you are likely focused on their own experiences rather than judging you.
By following these tips, you can overcome your hesitation and enjoy the experience of dining alone while traveling. Remember, it’s an opportunity to indulge in new flavors, relax, and embrace the independence that comes with exploring new places.
